Merve Ünsal presents a set of speculative field recordings from the site of a large-scale, centuries-old sinkhole located in Central Türkiye.
Breathing as Howling tunes into the sinkhole through a ten-and-a-half-minute sound recording of the artist’s walk around its periphery. In this acoustic speculation, the cadence of the wind, birds, and water inhabiting this void, as well as manipulated sounds from its imagined past and future, are brought together with her breathing to offer an experience of the site through the artist’s own body. In both Landscape Documents and Breathing as Howling, Ünsal reflects on the events, especially those that linger and haunt us, which we cannot measure with familiar units of time.
