Ceren Bingöl: Belighted, Governors Island

The relationship between a space and an individual is very private. The architectural, when combined with elements such as light and smell, create an ‘atmosphere’ that is personal. As a photographer who aims to relay this experience to my viewers, I found Ceren’s Governors Island photographs mysterious. I felt the texture of the building, I smelled the place, and I felt the ‘belighted’, as if I was the one taking the photographs. I believe these photographs are more about the experience than the visual documentation. As in Robert Polidori’s New Orleans photographs post-Katrina, the space seems to contain all the details; it went through something major. The people do not and cannot define the space, the space defines our experience.
